NSU clinicals in Lakeland, Polk County and the Heartland
Polk County sits between Tampa and Orlando, and Florida lists eight of its cities, from Bartow to Frostproof, as rural. Lakeland Regional Health publishes an online application for APRN students that cannot be edited once sent, BayCare's rules apply at its Polk sites, and south toward Sebring the search leans on community clinics and county health departments.

Polk and the three counties to its south
Polk is the big county here: Lakeland, Winter Haven, Haines City, Bartow (the county seat), Auburndale and Lake Wales, which together make up the Lakeland–Winter Haven metro. Highlands, around Sebring, and Hardee and DeSoto lie to the south. All four fall in West Central, one of eight regions in the Florida Center for Nursing's workforce projections, together with Tampa Bay and Sarasota. The center's 2022 model counted West Central among the regions with favorable NP supply against patient demand, but it compares working NPs with patients and says nothing about who has room for a student.
NSU has no campus in these counties; its nearest nursing campus is Tampa Bay. For an APRN student here, what matters is your residential ZIP code, because NSU measures a coordinator placement from home.
Lakeland Regional Health and BayCare
Lakeland Regional Health's graduate medical education site has an "APP Clinical Students" section that covers APRN, PA, CRNA and CNM students. Rotations run with schools under an affiliation with LRH, and students submit an online GME APP Student Application, which cannot be changed after submission. The eligibility policy the page refers to is not linked, and LRH also trains physician residents.
That one-shot form is the detail to plan around. Have your course number, semester dates, weekly schedule and preceptor details final before you submit, because a correction is not possible afterward.
BayCare's system-wide student process applies at its Polk sites too: affiliated schools only, and for APRN students a physician sponsor who signs an application for each rotation. NSU's affiliations with LRH, BayCare or anyone else are not public, so check with your clinical coordinator before applying anywhere.
Clinics, rural sites and the VA
Central Florida Health Care, based in Winter Haven, is the federally qualified health center HRSA lists for Polk, a natural first stop for NSG 5549 and NSG 5559 primary care, and the Florida Department of Health in Polk County runs the county health department. Highlands, Hardee and DeSoto each have their own Department of Health office as well.
Polk's rural stretches show up in state and federal lists. Florida names Auburndale, Bartow, Eagle Lake, Fort Meade, Frostproof, Lake Hamilton, Lake Wales and Mulberry as rural cities, and HRSA lists two rural health clinics among Polk's facility shortage areas, along with a health center and two prisons. Florida's TEACH program counts rural health clinics among the facilities it can reimburse for primary-care APRN students, though no rural health clinic joined in year one.
The Lakeland VA clinic belongs to VA Tampa, and VA training for NP students runs through agreements made at the school level. AGACNP students need hospital units for NSG 5629 onward, and PMHNP students need psychiatric settings for NSG 5719 onward; for both, Lakeland's hospital sits beside the Tampa and Orlando systems within reach, so compare all three.
150 miles from the middle of the peninsula
Polk's central position makes the coordinator route unusually wide. A student who names nobody is placed by NSU's clinical coordinator inside a 150-mile radius of home, and the decision is final; from Lakeland, the radius touches both coasts: Tampa and Sarasota to the west, Melbourne and Vero Beach to the east, Daytona Beach and Gainesville to the north, and Fort Myers to the south. From Sebring it reaches the Palm Beach area.
That range argues for choosing your own preceptor and giving NSU the name two semesters out, which keeps a weekly clinical in the county where you live and work. Compare the two routes before you decide.
Florida's rules in Polk and the Heartland
From Lakeland to Sebring, Florida's preceptor rule reads the same: a Florida-licensed APRN, physician or dentist precepts, and the student holds a chapter 464 RN license. In rural primary care you may meet autonomous APRNs, who practice without a physician protocol after 3,000 supervised hours, as well as protocol NPs, and both can precept you.

Questions NSU students ask
How do I apply to Lakeland Regional Health as an NP student?
Through LRH's online GME APP Student Application, listed under APP Clinical Students on its graduate medical education site. It covers APRN, PA, CRNA and CNM students from schools under affiliation with LRH, and the application cannot be changed once submitted. Whether NSU holds an LRH affiliation is not public, so raise it with your clinical coordinator first.
I live in Sebring. Could NSU place me on the Atlantic coast?
It could. NSU's coordinator can use any site within 150 miles of home, and from Sebring that circle reaches past West Palm Beach, about 100 miles away in a straight line, as well as Fort Myers, Tampa and Orlando. Naming your own Highlands County preceptor two semesters ahead keeps the clinical near home.
Are there rural clinics in Polk County for FNP hours?
HRSA lists two rural health clinics among Polk's facility shortage areas, and Central Florida Health Care in Winter Haven is the county's federally qualified health center. Florida's TEACH program can reimburse both kinds of facility for hosting primary-care APRN students. Any site still needs your clinical coordinator's approval before your NSG 5549 or NSG 5559 hours begin.
Does BayCare's process apply at its Polk County sites?
Yes. BayCare runs one system-wide student process, so a Polk BayCare site follows the same rules as its Tampa Bay hospitals: affiliated schools only, and for APRN students an MD or DO sponsor who signs an application for each rotation. BayCare's general page and its APRN FAQ disagree on whether the school helps find that sponsor.
