NSU clinicals in Broward County, NSU's home county
Broward is NSU's home ground: the Ron and Kathy Assaf College of Nursing is based at the Fort Lauderdale/Davie campus, with a second campus in Miramar. The county's hospital systems either publish no NP student process or leave the request to the school, so a clinical close to home usually starts with a preceptor you find in a practice or community clinic. Hand that name to your clinical coordinator two semesters before the course; leave it blank and the coordinator assigns you a site up to 150 miles from your home ZIP code.

Broward at a glance for an NSU student
Fort Lauderdale is the county seat, followed in size by Pembroke Pines, Hollywood, Miramar, Coral Springs and Pompano Beach, with Davie in the middle of them. The federal metro definition joins Broward to Miami-Dade and Palm Beach, and a realistic search here often crosses one of those lines.
Fort Lauderdale/Davie hosts the Entry BSN as well as the college itself. Miramar appears in NSU's APRN material for psychiatric-mental health: the certificates page lists on-site PMHNP coursework there, and the handbook's program list pairs Miramar with Tampa Bay for the PMHNP and with Palm Beach and Tampa Bay for the BSN to DNP.
The Florida Center for Nursing puts Broward in its South region with Miami-Dade and Monroe. In 2022 that region showed the highest NP supply in the state against modeled demand, 229% for all NPs. The figure weighs NPs against patients, not preceptor openings.
How Broward's hospital systems handle NP students
Published detail ranges from a checklist to nothing. None of it says whether a system holds an agreement with NSU, which NSU also keeps private, so treat every hospital below as a question for your clinical coordinator.
- Broward Health, the public hospital district, lists 2025 student and faculty onboarding requirements and a student affiliation rotation checklist on its orientation page; neither file could be opened. Its older rules used Complio, a Level II background check, a 10-panel drug screen, immunizations and BLS, due a month before the rotation.
- Memorial Healthcare System, based in Hollywood, publishes a visiting-student process for medical students only (VSLO, Complio, a Level 2 check with tri-county searches). No NP student route was found.
- Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston takes requests only from a school representative once an affiliation agreement is fully signed, and sends APRN students to an Office of Advanced Practice whose APRN process is not posted.
- HCA Florida's Broward hospitals have no student placement page on record.
- Baptist Health South Florida applies one process across its system, from Miami-Dade up to Boca Raton Regional Hospital: a confirmed preceptor before the request, through Complio. The Miami-Dade guide covers it step by step.
That is the tight spot for AGACNP students: apart from Baptist's preceptor-first route, the hospitals above either leave the request to the school or publish nothing, so start an acute-care search well before the notice date.
Clinics, the VA and the course each setting suits
The primary-care FNP courses, NSG 5549 and NSG 5559, fit Broward's family practices and federally qualified health centers. HRSA lists North Broward Hospital District (Broward Health's health centers), Broward Community & Family Health Centers, Care Resource, Citrus Health Network and Banyan among them. North Broward Hospital District ranked among the ten largest facilities in Florida's TEACH program in its first year, so it is set up to host trainees; that says nothing about which schools it works with.
For the pediatric course, NSG 5589, the FNP role calls for pediatric primary care, which points to pediatric practices and health centers. The county's two children's hospitals, Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood and Broward Health Salah Foundation Children's Hospital, are inpatient and specialty settings rather than the primary-care fit the course is built around.
PMHNP students need psychiatric practice from NSG 5719 onward: outpatient psychiatry groups, community behavioral health programs and health centers with psychiatric services. The Florida Department of Health in Broward County is another public setting, and the Miami VA operates Broward clinics in Hollywood (two sites, one named Pembroke Pines), Sunrise and Deerfield Beach. VA trainees arrive under a school-level affiliation agreement with the medical center's education office.
HRSA designates one primary-care shortage area here, Hollywood and Dania Beach, and lists two health centers and a tribal clinic as facility shortage areas.
The 150-mile rule, drawn from a Broward ZIP code
With no preceptor named, NSU's clinical coordinator chooses a site as far as 150 miles from the ZIP code you live in, and NSU treats that choice as final. Around Fort Lauderdale, the circle covers all of Miami-Dade and Palm Beach, runs up the Treasure Coast and reaches across the Everglades to Naples and Fort Myers.
Distance matters because NSU hours start alongside the course's didactic work and run every week of the term, never bunched at the start or end (see the weekly hours rule). A Pembroke Pines FNP student placed in Stuart or Naples would make that drive week after week around a nursing job. Florida's preceptor rules, in brief
Anyone who precepts you in Broward needs Florida licensure in one of four categories (APRN, MD, DO or dentist), and at any site in the state you must be an RN licensed under chapter 464; see the Florida preceptor rule guide. Florida's default is protocol practice under a physician; a primary-care NP who has logged 3,000 supervised hours can register as autonomous instead. Either can precept you.

Questions NSU students ask
Can I do NSU clinicals at Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston?
Only through your school. Cleveland Clinic Florida says a school representative must arrange each placement after an affiliation agreement is fully executed, and it checks direct student requests with the school. APRN students go through its Office of Advanced Practice. NSU does not publish which systems it holds agreements with, so raise Weston with your clinical coordinator instead of calling the hospital.
Does NSU's Miramar campus matter for PMHNP clinicals?
The 2025-26 catalog described the PMHNP as hybrid at Miramar and Tampa Bay before the MSN moved online, and the certificates page still lists on-site PMHNP coursework at Miramar. A campus sets where classes meet, not where your clinical site is: your psychiatric preceptor can be anywhere that fits the course and passes the coordinator's check.
I live in Coral Springs. Can my preceptor be in Palm Beach County?
Yes. A preceptor you name can practice in any county that works for you, as long as the clinical coordinator confirms the preceptor and site fit your course. Boca Raton is next door, and the Palm Beach County guide covers Boca Raton Regional's Baptist process and Tenet's preceptor-agreement form.
With so many NPs in South Florida, is a Broward preceptor easy to find?
Not necessarily. The Florida Center for Nursing's 229% figure for its South region sets working NPs against modeled patient demand; it is not a count of preceptors. Florida preceptors also host students from out-of-state online programs, who need a Florida-licensed preceptor just as you do. Give yourself the full two semesters of lead time NSU sets.
