Miami-Dade preceptors for NSU nursing students
In Miami-Dade, the two health systems with published student rules agree on the order of events: the preceptor comes first. Baptist Health South Florida wants a confirmed preceptor before any rotation request, and Nicklaus Children's tells NP students to secure one before sending their requirements. Jackson, UHealth, Mount Sinai and the HCA hospitals publish no NP route, so a preceptor you line up and name to NSU's clinical coordinator two semesters ahead opens the most local doors.

Miami-Dade and NSU's Miami campus
Miami is the county seat, and Hialeah, Miami Gardens, Homestead, Doral and Miami Beach are its next-largest cities, with Kendall to the southwest. NSU's Miami campus teaches the Entry and Accelerated BSN. Those students are placed by NSU within 75 miles of their campus, a separate rule covered on the BSN clinicals page. APRN students follow the graduate rule instead, measured from home.
The Florida Center for Nursing counts Miami-Dade in its South region, where primary-care NPs stood at 312% of modeled demand in 2022, the highest of Florida's eight regions. Read that as clinicians measured against patients; it says nothing about preceptor openings or how many students are asking.
Baptist Health South Florida, step by step
Baptist's process, the fullest found in the county, applies at every Baptist hospital up to Boca Raton Regional. It is written for school-credit rotations generally and never names NP students:
- A partner schoolRotations are open only to students of partner and affiliate schools, under a signed Master Agreement and Program Letter of Agreement. Baptist posts its affiliated-school list as an undated public spreadsheet and gives partner schools priority placement. Your clinical coordinator can tell you where NSU stands.
- The preceptor, confirmedA confirmed placement and preceptor must exist before the request. Your school coordinator can help, or you may look up Baptist departments and providers on baptisthealth.net and contact them yourself.
- One Complio profile per rotationComplio (American DataBank) is the only platform accepted. Each rotation, up to four months, needs its own profile at least 10 business days before the start, with a Level 1 background check, a 10-panel drug screen, TB, MMR, varicella, flu and BLS.
- Somewhere other than your workplaceBaptist bars its own employees from rotating at the facility that employs them.
Baptist sends ASN and BSN requests through the CCPS placement system and gives no separate graduate route, so ask your clinical coordinator how an NSU APRN request would travel.
Nicklaus Children's and the systems that publish nothing
Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami requires school approval and enrollment in a credit program at an affiliated institution. Its nursing page tells NP students to secure a preceptor before submitting their requirements; the school representative requests nursing rotations through CCPS, while practicum rotations go to the hospital's student-placement specialist. For an FNP student, pediatric primary care is still the core of NSG 5589, so a Nicklaus specialist fits only if your coordinator agrees the setting matches the course.
Jackson Health System has no public NP placement page, though a Jackson job posting describes a Center for Academic Partnerships that tracks student placements. Jackson Memorial is the UM Miller School of Medicine's major teaching hospital, and Holtz Children's Hospital belongs to Jackson. UHealth's visiting-student page is for medical students, Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach publishes physician training only, and HCA Florida Kendall, Aventura and Mercy have no student page on record. For AGACNP students, most acute-care units here therefore start with a preceptor who agrees to take you and a request your school makes.
Health centers, the VA and the course each fits
HRSA's list of federally qualified health centers in Miami-Dade includes Jessie Trice Community Health System, Citrus Health Network, Community Health of South Florida, Borinquen Health Care Center, Miami Beach Community Health Center, Care Resource, Banyan, Camillus Health Concern, Empower "U" and Center for Family & Child Enrichment. Borinquen, Miami Beach Community Health Center, Citrus Health Network and Community Health of South Florida were all among the ten largest facilities in the state's TEACH program, which pays sites like these for hosting primary-care APRN students.
Those centers suit the FNP's primary-care courses, NSG 5549 and NSG 5559, and it is worth asking each about the pediatric and women's health services that NSG 5589 and NSG 5569 need. HRSA designates population shortage areas in Liberty City, Little Haiti and Wynwood Park and lists ten health centers and the Miccosukee tribal site as facility shortage areas. Psychiatric practices and behavioral health programs are where PMHNP students search, and the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County rounds out the public options.
The Miami VA Healthcare System runs the Bruce W. Carter VA Medical Center and clinics in Miami and Homestead. Its training page lists VA-STEP for BSN students only; NP trainees come through an affiliation agreement between VA and the school.
What 150 miles means from Miami
When no preceptor is named, NSU's clinical coordinator assigns a site somewhere inside 150 miles of your home ZIP code, and NSU does not reopen that assignment. A circle that size around Miami covers all of Broward and Palm Beach, crosses the Everglades past Naples and runs down the Keys. A Homestead student could be assigned in Palm Beach County and drive it weekly, since NSU hours run every week of the term.

Florida's rules for a Miami-Dade preceptor
Anyone precepting you in Miami-Dade must be Florida-licensed as an APRN, physician (MD or DO) or dentist, and you need an RN license granted under chapter 464; both halves are set out in the Florida preceptor rule guide. A protocol NP and a primary-care NP registered as autonomous qualify equally.

Questions NSU students ask
Can I contact Baptist Health providers myself for an NSU clinical?
Baptist allows it: its student page says you may look up departments and providers and contact them directly, or work through your school coordinator. The rotation still depends on your school being a Baptist partner with signed agreements, and on a Complio profile. NSU does not publish its agreements, so confirm with your clinical coordinator before you rely on a Baptist site.
Does NSU's Miami campus place APRN students in Miami?
The Miami campus runs the Entry and Accelerated BSN, and BSN students are placed within 75 miles of their campus. APRN placement ignores the campus: you either name a preceptor two semesters before a clinical course or accept a coordinator placement inside 150 miles of your home ZIP code.
Is the Miami VA an option for NSU NP students?
Only through the school. The Miami VA's training page lists VA-STEP for BSN students, and NP trainees come through academic affiliation agreements that schools arrange with the medical center's Designated Education Officer. VA keeps final authority over how many trainees it accepts and where they go.
Does Jackson Health System take NP students?
Jackson publishes no NP student process, and whether NSU holds an agreement with Jackson is not public. If a Jackson APRN or physician agrees to precept you, give their details to your clinical coordinator early and let the school handle the request; a Jackson job posting mentions a Center for Academic Partnerships that tracks student placements.
