BLS, ACLS and PALS for NSU nursing students
NSU requires a current ACLS certificate from every AGACNP applicant, whether the route is the MSN, the postgraduate certificate or the BSN to DNP concentration. For other tracks, life support training becomes a requirement when a clinical site asks for it: the Nursing Student Handbook names BLS, advanced life support and PALS among the extras a practicum can bring. Whatever you hold, keep it valid through every clinical semester.

ACLS: part of admission for AGACNP
The only life support credential NSU names as an admission item is ACLS, and only for acute care. The graduate admissions page says: "For applicants interested in AGACNP current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certificate is required." The postgraduate certificates page repeats ACLS for AGACNP applicants, and the BSN to DNP AGACNP concentration asks for a Florida RN license plus ACLS. The reason is the setting. AGACNP clinical courses are acute care: in the 2026-27 catalog, three 190-hour clinicals (NSG 5629, NSG 5639, NSG 5659) lead into the 285-hour NSG 5669 capstone. Our AGACNP clinical courses page describes the settings each one needs.
The admission text asks for a current certificate at application. NSU's public pages do not add a separate rule for later semesters, but the handbook lists advanced life support among the requirements a clinical site may set, and an acute care site can reasonably expect a valid card on every shift. Treat a lapse during the clinical year as a placement risk.
What the handbook says about BLS, ALS and PALS
For every other track, the requirement comes from the site. The handbook's graduate section (printed page 138) says: "Students in practicum and/or clinical rotations may have additional requirements including, but not limited to, criminal background checks, basic life support, advanced life support, pediatric advanced life support, immunizations, and health forms."
The word that matters is "may." BLS is not an admission item for FNP, PMHNP or DNP students on NSU's public pages, and neither is PALS. Once a site lists one of them, though, it stops being optional for that placement, because NSU's rule on unmet facility requirements cancels a placement when an item is missing by the first scheduled day.
If your job already requires BLS, you probably hold a card now. Check its date against your clinical calendar rather than your employer's renewal cycle. Our clinical site requirements page covers the other items a site list tends to include.
Which settings tend to ask for PALS
This section is general guidance about how facilities set student requirements. It is not NSU policy, and the site's own list is the only one that counts.
PALS questions come up most for FNP students in NSG 5589, the Primary Care Pediatrics Clinical (95 hours in the 2026-27 catalog). Pediatric practices, hospital-based pediatric clinics and urgent care centers that see children can list PALS for students, while other pediatric offices are content with BLS. Settings with emergency or urgent care work are the other place life support cards come up for FNP students, where a site may ask for ACLS as well as BLS. AGACNP sites focus on adults and older adults, so ACLS is the expected card there. PMHNP settings vary widely, from outpatient practices to inpatient units, so ask each psychiatric site directly rather than assuming.
Keeping cards current across clinical semesters
Clinical courses at NSU run back to back, so a card that is valid on the first clinical day can expire before the capstone. Here is the span each MSN APRN track's clinicals cover in NSU's published full-time and flex plans.

Check the expiration date printed on each card against those semesters. If it falls inside a clinical semester, renew in the break before that semester starts, so you never carry an expired card into a site. Booking the right course and keeping proof
Before you pay for a class, ask the site two questions: which provider's card it accepts, and whether a course completed entirely online counts or an in-person skills session is required. Facilities differ on both, and a card the site will not accept costs you a second class and a second weekend.
Proof matters as much as the class. NSU's public account of what DISA CastleBranch holds stops at vaccines, the physical exam and the background check; life support cards go unmentioned. Your program or the site will tell you where a card goes, which may be CastleBranch, a hospital's student onboarding portal or both. Questions NSU students ask
Do NSU FNP students need ACLS?
NSU's admission requirements name ACLS only for AGACNP applicants. An FNP student can still meet it as a site requirement, since the handbook lists advanced life support among the extras a practicum may require, and settings such as urgent care or emergency-based clinics may ask for it. Check each site's list before you name the preceptor to your clinical coordinator.
Is BLS required for NSU's nurse practitioner programs?
NSU's public admission pages do not list BLS for the FNP, PMHNP or DNP programs. The handbook does include basic life support among the requirements a clinical site may add, and whatever a site requires becomes yours for that placement. If you already hold BLS through your job, keep it valid through all of your clinical semesters.
Does my ACLS need to stay current for the whole AGACNP program?
NSU's admission text requires a current ACLS certificate at application, and its public pages set no separate rule for later semesters. Acute care sites can expect a valid card, and the handbook lists advanced life support among possible site requirements. Plan to keep ACLS valid across every AGACNP clinical, first course to capstone, and ask your program director if a renewal date falls awkwardly.
Do I need PALS for the NSU FNP pediatrics clinical?
NSU's public documents do not make PALS a requirement of NSG 5589, the Primary Care Pediatrics Clinical. PALS appears in the handbook's list of extras a clinical site may set, so the practice or clinic where you train decides. Ask when the preceptor agrees, because a PALS class needs booking well ahead.
Where do I upload my BLS or ACLS card for NSU?
NSU's public description of DISA CastleBranch covers immunization and physical exam records and background checks, and it does not mention life support cards. Your program or clinical site will tell you where a card belongs, which can be CastleBranch, a site's own onboarding system or both. Keep a clear digital copy of each card on hand.
