The 500 clinical hours NSU's DNP requires, and NSG 7460 when you are short
NSU's post-master's DNP expects 500 supervised clinical hours earned after your BSN, documented on university letterhead by the program that supervised them. NSU's own sources disagree on when the 500 must be in place.

What NSU asks for, in its own words
Three NSU sources describe the requirement, each from a different angle. Read together, they set the terms: the hours come after your BSN, they are supervised clinical hours, and the school that supervised them has to vouch for them in writing.
- Admission (graduate admissions page and 2026-27 catalog): "official documentation of all supervised post baccalaureate practice hours", stating the "total number of preceptor-verified clinical experience hours", on university letterhead from your previous program director.
- DNP web page: "A student must have 500 clinical hours obtained in their M.S. program and verified by the Program Director prior to starting
NSG 7431Project I." - 2025-26 and 2026-27 catalogs: "Prior to starting
NSG 7451Project IV: Evaluation, 500 clinical practice hours post Bachelor of Science in Nursing must be completed. These hours may be credited from the M.S.N. program, but must be verified by the university where the student completed the M.S.N."
On the DNP page, the 500 come from your master's program, separate from the 600 project practicum hours you earn at NSU in NSG 7431 through NSG 7451. The DNP project practicum page covers those project hours and the site they need.
The checkpoint conflict: before Project I or before Project IV
The two deadlines sit three semesters apart in the post-master's plan. NSG 7431 Project I runs in semester II; NSG 7451 Project IV runs in semester V, the last one. For a student with a full 500 on the letter, the conflict changes nothing. For a student who is short, it decides how much time there is to close the gap.

Plan to the earlier date unless your program director confirms the later one for your cohort. If the web page's reading applies and you are short, the top-up hours have to be finished before Project I, which leaves very little room. Raise it at admission or orientation rather than in semester II.
A letter showing fewer than 500 hours is not a rejection, but under the web page's reading the clock to fix it runs out after your first semester.
NSG 7460: closing the gap 150 hours at a time
NSU's DNP page spells out the remedy: a student without 500 clinical hours "will be enrolled in NSG 7460 Scholarly Inquiry in Clinical Practice until the 500 hours are met. Each NSG 7460 requires 150 clinical hours and is 3 credits." How many enrollments you need follows directly from the total on your letter.

NSG 7460 hours are clinical hours, so each enrollment needs a clinical setting and someone to supervise you. NSU does not publish the site or supervisor rules for the course, where it falls in the sequence, or whether it can run beside a project course. Your program director sets all three, so ask before you plan a semester around it.
Credits, grades and time limits with NSG 7460
NSU's DNP page puts total credits at "38-40" once NSG 7460 is involved, against 36 for the standard plan. The arithmetic does not line up neatly: 36 plus one 3-credit NSG 7460 is 39, and two would make 42. NSU does not explain the range, so ask your program director how many credits your own plan will carry.
Each NSG 7460 is a doctoral course, graded like the rest: NSU requires a B or higher in every required DNP course, and a second failed course means dismissal. See NSU's grading rules.
Time matters too. The 2026-27 catalog gives two DNP limits, "within five years" and "2.66 years or 8 semesters". If each NSG 7460 took a semester of its own, the five-semester plan would stretch to six or seven, still inside eight, but NSU does not publish how the course is scheduled.
Who should check their hours first
NSU's own MSN APRN tracks carry far more than 500 hours: 855 in the current plan and 765 in the older 2025-26 plan, both computed from NSU's per-course figures (see the 95-hours-per-credit math). Whatever program you came from, the figure that counts is the total on the verification letter.
The applicants to check first are those whose master's had few supervised clinical hours, and those entering with a master's in a related field plus a BSN, the route that starts with the fall-only NSG 7299 Transition to D.N.P. course. The DNP page ties the 500 to hours "obtained in their M.S. program", so a master's without a clinical component is the likeliest route to NSG 7460.
Getting the verification letter right the first time
- Ask for the total number of supervised, preceptor-verified clinical hours completed after your BSN, not only a list of courses.
- It must be on university letterhead, from the program director or the university where you completed the MSN.
- Request it well before your application deadline, since the admissions office asks for it as part of your file.
- If your hours come from more than one post-BSN program, ask your NSU program director whether letters from each can be combined.
How BSN to DNP students fit in
The 500-hour checkpoint is written for the post-master's DNP. BSN to DNP students build their clinical hours inside NSU: 855 APRN clinical hours in the MSN phase and 600 project hours after, 1,455 in total in the 2026-27 catalog. NSU's BSN to DNP page puts it as "more than 500 clinical hours each in M.S.N. and D.N.P." Those 855 clinical hours fall under the same two-semester notice rule as every APRN clinical course, so preceptor planning starts early in the program.
One overlap is worth knowing. The 2026-27 catalog also asks BSN to DNP applicants for "official documentation of all supervised, postbaccalaureate practice hours", so gather whatever supervised hours you have before you apply. Do NSU project hours count toward the DNP 500 clinical hours?
NSU's DNP page describes the 500 as hours "obtained in their M.S. program", separate from the 600 practicum hours in NSG 7431 to NSG 7451. The catalogs say only that the 500 must be done before NSG 7451 and may be credited from the MSN. Ask your program director before assuming any project hour counts toward 500.
What is NSG 7460 at NSU?
NSG 7460 Scholarly Inquiry in Clinical Practice is the course NSU uses for post-master's DNP students who arrive with fewer than 500 verified post-BSN clinical hours. Each enrollment is 3 credits and 150 clinical hours, and students repeat it until the 500 are met. NSU's DNP page puts total program credits at 38 to 40 with it.
Who verifies my prior clinical hours for NSU's DNP?
The program where you earned them. NSU's DNP page says the program director verifies them; the catalogs say the university where you completed the MSN; the admissions page asks for official documentation on university letterhead from your previous program director, stating the total number of preceptor-verified clinical experience hours.
Can I start NSU's DNP with fewer than 500 clinical hours?
