Pensacola, Fort Walton Beach and Panama City: NSU clinicals in the Panhandle

The western Panhandle is the part of Florida farthest from NSU: Pensacola is more than 300 miles from the Tampa Bay campus in a straight line. Your clinicals happen out here, with a preceptor you name two semesters ahead or wherever the clinical coordinator places you within 150 miles. Both Pensacola hospital systems publish a student route, and the FCN counts fewer primary-care NPs relative to demand here than anywhere else in Florida.

Five Gulf counties and three metro areas

Escambia (Pensacola), Santa Rosa (Milton, Gulf Breeze), Okaloosa (Crestview, Fort Walton Beach, Niceville, Destin), Walton (DeFuniak Springs, Freeport) and Bay (Panama City, Lynn Haven, Panama City Beach, Callaway) form three federal metro areas: Pensacola, Crestview-Fort Walton Beach-Destin and Panama City. The Florida Center for Nursing files all five, with the rest of the Panhandle, under its Northwest region.

Walton is a rural county, and north Walton and Freeport lie in a Rural Area of Opportunity. Each of the five counties has at least one designated population shortage area for primary care, and Santa Rosa has three.

How far NSU is from here, and what that means

No NSU campus is close to the Panhandle. The APRN intensives run at Palm Beach, and for some FNP courses at Tampa Bay, so each one is a long trip; the intensives page lists them by track. Pensacola to Tampa Bay alone is more than twice the 150-mile placement radius.

Distance touches admission too, and NSU's sources disagree. Three NSU documents, the 2025-26 handbook, a July 2024 policy and the 2025-26 catalog, set a 225-mile residence limit from campus for MSN APRN and certificate students, and Pensacola and Fort Walton Beach sit far outside it. The 2026-27 graduate catalog, which calls the MSN an online program, states no mileage rule at all. Sacred Heart and Baptist Health Care: two published routes

Two Pensacola-based systems tell students how to apply:

Ascension Sacred Heart (Pensacola, Emerald Coast and Bay): NP, PA and nursing student requests go to a central Student Onboarding mailbox. The page says visiting rotations need an affiliation agreement first and a new one can take up to 8 weeks, though that line sits in the medical-student section, so its reach to NP students is unclear. Sacred Heart's Studer Family Children's Hospital is a pediatric setting for NSG 5589.
Baptist Health Care: an online Student Application, with "NP student" under Medical Affairs and a graduate student category for master's and doctoral clinical hours. Some internships require affiliation agreements, approval usually takes 2 to 4 weeks, and the affiliated-school list is a PDF created October 28, 2024. Who finds an NP student's preceptor is not stated.

HCA Florida West and HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin publish nothing for student placement. Take any question about agreements to your clinical coordinator; this page makes no statement about NSU agreements with any of these systems. Clinics, the VA Gulf Coast system and your NSU course

Outside the hospitals, these are settings Panhandle students look at, listed as examples rather than NSU sites:

Community health centers: Community Health Northwest Florida (formerly Escambia Community Clinics), PanCare of Florida and North Florida Medical Centers in Okaloosa.
VA: the Panhandle is served by VA Gulf Coast, headquartered in Biloxi, Mississippi, with Florida clinics in Pensacola, at Naval Hospital Pensacola, at Eglin Air Force Base, in Panama City and in Panama City Beach. Its training page mentions primary care and NP internship programs; VA trainees come through affiliation agreements the school arranges.
Public health: each of the five counties has its own Department of Health office, from Escambia east to Bay.

FNP students fit primary-care settings for NSG 5549, NSG 5559 and the NSG 5599 capstone. AGACNP students need hospital units at Sacred Heart, Baptist or HCA for courses such as NSG 5639 and the NSG 5669 capstone. PMHNP students look for psychiatric practices from NSG 5729 onward.

Your own preceptor, or a placement that may cross into Alabama

NSU's two routes work the same way here, with more at stake. If you bring the clinical coordinator a preceptor and site two semesters before a clinical course, the coordinator weighs both against NSU's requirements. If you bring no one, the coordinator chooses a site up to 150 miles from your home ZIP code, and the choice stands. From Pensacola that circle stretches east to Panama City and west through Mobile to the Mississippi coast, yet stops short of Tallahassee; from Panama City it takes in both Tallahassee and Pensacola.

NSU is silent on out-of-state placements for APRN students, and an Alabama or Mississippi site would bring that state's rules and a question about your RN license; see clinicals outside Florida. The Northwest's NP figure and Florida's preceptor rule

The FCN's workforce model gave the Northwest a 2022 primary-care NP adequacy of 101%, the lowest of Florida's eight regions, against 312% in South Florida. It compares working NPs with modeled patient demand, not preceptors with room for a student, but it does describe the thinnest primary-care NP workforce in the state relative to patients, so an early, complete request counts for more here.

Is there an NSU campus near Pensacola?

No. NSU's closest campus with nursing is Tampa Bay, more than 300 miles from Pensacola in a straight line, and the Jacksonville and Orlando campuses offer no nursing. Panhandle students take the coursework online, travel for the MSN APRN intensives and complete clinicals locally, with a preceptor they name or a coordinator placement within 150 miles of home.

Do Sacred Heart and Baptist Health Care need an agreement with my school?

Sacred Heart says visiting rotations need an affiliation agreement first, in wording written for medical students, and Baptist Health Care says some internships require one. Baptist posts an affiliated-school list dated October 2024. Neither is a statement about NSU, so check with your clinical coordinator first.

Can I live in the Panhandle and enroll in NSU's online MSN?

NSU's sources conflict. Under the 2025-26 handbook and a July 2024 policy, APRN students must reside no more than 225 miles from their campus, and the western Panhandle is farther out than that. The 2026-27 graduate catalog describes the MSN as online and sets no mileage rule. Get a clear answer from admissions or your program director before you enroll.

Does the Northwest's 101% figure mean preceptors are scarce?

It means the region's primary-care NP workforce is small relative to modeled patient demand, the lowest ratio in Florida in the FCN's 2022 data. It does not count preceptors who take students. Start early and search all five counties, with your NSU course dates and weekly hours ready when you ask.
