NSU FNP clinical courses, in order
NSU's Family NP track has five clinical courses: two adult primary care clinicals (NSG 5549, NSG 5559), a pediatrics clinical (NSG 5589), a women's health clinical (NSG 5569) and the capstone (NSG 5599). Each needs its own approved preceptor, named two semesters before the course, and the full-time and flex plans place them in different semesters. Here is the sequence, what each course pairs with and the setting that fits.

The five FNP clinicals at a glance
Every FNP clinical is paired with a didactic course on the same subject, taken the same term, and NSU's catalog lists the clinical's credits and hours separately. Taken in order, the five clinicals move from adult primary care into the two specialty courses and finish with the capstone.

Before any of these you complete NSG 5502 Advanced Health Assessment, which has its own 2-day intensive at Palm Beach. NSU lists the length and campus of each intensive but not the dates; the on-campus intensives page covers travel planning.
Order in the full-time and flex plans
The full-time FNP plan runs six semesters and the flex plan eight, and the BSN to DNP FNP concentration has its own sequence. All three keep the same order of clinicals: two adult courses, then pediatrics and women's health together, then the capstone. What changes is how soon the first clinical arrives.

NSU's FNP page also describes the program as taking “only seven semesters”, which matches neither published plan. If your plan of study differs from the table, your program director's version is the one that counts. The full-time vs flex page compares the two plans course by course.
What each course asks of a preceptor and site
NSU does not publish a list of settings per course. It publishes the test instead: your coordinator checks the preceptor against NSU's supervision requirements and judges whether the site offers the experience the course calls for. The course titles are the best public guide to what that experience looks like.
NSG 5549andNSG 5559, adult primary care: family medicine and internal medicine offices, community health centers and other outpatient practices that see adults with acute complaints and chronic disease. At 190 hours each, these are the longest weekly commitments before the capstone.NSG 5589, pediatrics: a pediatric practice, or a family practice with a steady pediatric panel.NSG 5569, women's health: an OB/GYN practice or a women's health clinic.NSG 5599, capstone: a primary care practice seeing patients of all ages, where the adult, pediatric and women's health content comes together. NSU's FNP page calls the certificate version of this course the “Primary Care Integration Practicum”.
At a Florida site, every FNP preceptor must be licensed in Florida as an APRN, a physician (MD) or an osteopathic physician (DO) under the state's preceptor rule. Florida's TEACH program pays federally qualified health centers and similar community clinics for hosting primary-care APRN students, which makes those clinics worth approaching; see TEACH. The two 95-hour courses have a guide of their own: pediatrics and women's health.
When to name each FNP preceptor
Under NSU's handbook, you tell the clinical coordinator which preceptor and site you have chosen a full two semesters ahead of every clinical course. Counting back from the plans above puts each FNP notice in the semesters below. Your coordinator sets the exact date within each one, and the two-semester deadline page walks through pinning it down.

On the full-time plan, your first adult primary care preceptor is due while you are still in NSG 5000 and NSG 5111, your very first courses. With no preceptor named, the coordinator places you somewhere up to 150 miles from your residential ZIP code, and NSU calls that placement not negotiable; the 150-mile rule page explains it.
Full-time FNP students face a notice every semester from I to IV, and semester III carries two at once: pediatrics and women's health.
Intensives and the weekly rhythm
Two of the paired didactic courses bring you to campus. NSG 5542 and NSG 5550 each include a 2-day intensive at Palm Beach or Tampa Bay, and NSU warns that its intensive schedule can shift. Put those days in front of your preceptor when you set the clinical schedule, because FNP clinical hours begin in the same week as the didactic course and continue every week after.
The heaviest scheduling semester is the one holding NSG 5589 and NSG 5569: two clinicals of 95 hours each, often at two different practices, running side by side. The capstone that follows is the largest single block at 285 hours; the capstone clinicals page explains why it deserves the earliest search of all.

Questions NSU students ask
Can one preceptor cover more than one NSU FNP clinical course?
NSU does not publish a rule on it. The handbook treats each clinical course on its own: you notify the coordinator before each one, and the coordinator confirms that the preceptor and site fit that course. A family practice seeing adults, children and women might suit several titles, but ask your clinical coordinator before you build a plan around a single preceptor.
Which FNP clinical comes first at NSU?
NSG 5549 Primary Care Adult I Clinical, taken alongside the didactic NSG 5542. Full-time students take it in semester III, flex students in semester V, and BSN to DNP students on the FNP concentration in semester IV. NSG 5502 Advanced Health Assessment, with its Palm Beach intensive, comes before it in every plan.
Where are the NSU FNP intensives held?
NSG 5502 has a 2-day intensive at Palm Beach. NSG 5542 and NSG 5550 each have 2 days at Palm Beach or Tampa Bay. NSU keeps the dates off its public pages and cautions that the schedule may move, so watch your course in Canvas and plan clinical days around them.
Do my FNP clinicals have to be in Florida?
NSU's sources differ. The 2026-27 catalog accepts any unrestricted RN license for FNP, kept current wherever your practicum takes place; the 2025-26 handbook and catalog asked for Florida licensure and a home within 225 miles of campus. NSU does not publish where it allows sites outside Florida. Confirm with your program director; the outside Florida page sets out both versions.
Why are two of the FNP clinicals only 95 hours?
NSG 5589 pediatrics and NSG 5569 women's health are 1-credit clinicals, and NSU's rate is 95 practicum hours per credit hour. They run in the same semester, so together they equal one 2-credit adult course. Each still needs its own approved preceptor and weekly attendance from the first week.
